Why Nevada Is a Primary Corporate Service of Process Hub
Because of Nevada’s business-friendly corporate statutes (NRS Chapter 78 for corporations and NRS Chapter 86 for limited-liability companies), lack of corporate income tax, and strong charging-order protections, hundreds of thousands of national and international companies are incorporated or organized in the Silver State. Even if a corporation or LLC has zero physical storefronts in Nevada and conducts all of its operations in California, New York, or Texas, if it is formed under Nevada law or registered to do business in Nevada, it is legally required to maintain a Registered Agent with a physical street address in Nevada.
Consequently, serving a business entity in Nevada—usually at a high-volume Commercial Registered Agent hub in Carson City or Las Vegas—is one of the fastest, most reliable ways to establish personal jurisdiction over a corporate defendant or domesticate a third-party business records subpoena.

Statutory Rules for Serving Business Entities in Nevada (NRCP 4.2(c) & NRS 14.020)
Service of process on domestic and foreign corporations, LLCs, limited partnerships, and business trusts in Nevada is governed by Nevada Rule of Civil Procedure (NRCP) 4.2(c), NRS 14.020, and NRS Chapter 77 (Model Registered Agents Act).
Under NRCP 4.2(c)(1), a Nevada business entity—or a foreign entity registered to do business in Nevada—may be served by delivering a copy of the summons and complaint personally to:
- The Registered Agent of the entity (or an employee authorized to accept service at a commercial registered agent’s office under NRS 14.020(2));
- Any Officer of a corporation (e.g., President, Secretary, Treasurer, Vice President);
- Any Director of a corporation;
- Any Managing or General Agent of the entity;
- Any Manager or Managing Member of a Limited-Liability Company (LLC); or
- Any General Partner of a partnership or limited partnership.
The NRS 14.020(2) Street Address & Regular Business Hours Mandate
Under NRS 14.020(2), every registered agent in Nevada must maintain a physical street address in this State (a P.O. Box or commercial mail receiving agency / UPS Store box alone is prohibited) and must keep that office open during normal business hours (at least from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, Monday through Friday, excluding legal holidays) with a natural person present who is authorized to receive service of legal process.

What If the Registered Agent Resigned, Moved, or Refuses Service? (Substituted Service on the Nevada Secretary of State)
Frequently in litigation against shell LLCs, defunct contractors, or evasive holding companies, you will discover on the Nevada Secretary of State’s website that the entity’s status is “Revoked”, “Default”, or “Dissolved”, or that the registered agent filed a Statement of Resignation under NRS 77.370—or our process server arrives at a non-commercial registered agent’s address only to find a vacant office or a private residence where the agent has moved away.
When a corporate entity cannot be served through its registered agent or an officer inside Nevada despite diligent effort, NRCP 4.2(c)(3) and NRS 14.030 provide a powerful statutory solution: Substituted Service via the Nevada Secretary of State.
Step-by-Step Procedure Under NRCP 4.2(c)(3) and NRS 14.030:
- Attempt Service & Obtain a Due Diligence / Non-Service Declaration: First, our licensed Nevada process server attempts service at the registered agent address of record (and any known Nevada officer address) and executes a sworn Declaration of Non-Service / Due Diligence confirming that the registered agent cannot be located at the address on file or has resigned.
- Hand-Delivery to the Nevada Secretary of State in Carson City: Under NRCP 4.2(c)(3)(A) and NRS 14.030(1), service is then made by delivering a copy of the summons and complaint (along with the statutory Secretary of State service fee) directly to the Nevada Secretary of State — Commercial Recordings Division at the Paul Laxalt Building, 401 North Carson Street (and 101 N. Carson Street, Suite 3), Carson City, NV 89701.
- Mandatory Certified Mailing to Last Known Officer/Entity Address: Under NRCP 4.2(c)(3)(B), the plaintiff must also send a copy of the summons and complaint by registered or certified mail, return receipt requested, to the entity—or to any known officer, director, managing agent, or member—at its last known address shown on the records of the Nevada Secretary of State (or any other address known to the plaintiff).
- Extended 40-Day Answer Deadline (NRS 14.030(3)): Note that when an entity is served via the Nevada Secretary of State under NRS 14.030, the defendant typically has 40 days (or the period specified by statute/rule) after delivery to the Secretary of State to file a responsive pleading before default may be entered.
Serving Out-of-State Insurance Companies Doing Business in Nevada (NRS 680A.250 & NRS 680A.260)
If your lawsuit names an authorized insurance carrier (e.g., State Farm, GEICO, Progressive, Allstate, Farmers, or a commercial surplus lines insurer), do not serve their local claims office or an ordinary corporate registered agent unless verifying NRS Title 57!
Under NRS 680A.250(1), every authorized insurer transacting insurance in Nevada must appoint the Nevada Commissioner of Insurance as its attorney to receive service of legal process, and for foreign or alien insurers, service upon the Commissioner is the exclusive method of serving legal process.
- CRITICAL NEVADA RULE: The Nevada Division of Insurance (1818 East College Parkway, Suite 103, Carson City, NV 89706) ONLY accepts hand-delivered service of process in Carson City (accompanied by two copies of the process and the statutory $5.00 fee under NRS 680A.260). They do NOT accept service by mail, and they do NOT accept service at their Las Vegas office. Our Carson City process servers handle Division of Insurance hand-deliveries daily.
